Brownfield Community Redevelopment Program - Pasco County

On January 10, 2012, the Board of County Commissioners formally adopted, through Resolution, the Brownfields Program, administered by the Office of Economic Growth (OEG). The Brownfields Program recognizes that the reuse of blighted, commercial, and industrial lands is an important component of sound land use policy for productive urban purposes and to assist in preventing sprawl. Furthermore, redevelopment of these properties helps contain public costs associated with installing new water, sewer, and transportation infrastructure and provides an avenue to remediate contaminated or perceived contaminated properties.

Prior to the construction of the Lacoochee Community Center, OEG provided a Phase I and Phase II environmental assessment, including ground penetrating radar services. During those assessments, contaminated soils were discovered in limited areas, which do not pose immediate risk to the public, but do require the cleanup of the contamination. An Analysis of Brownfield Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA) has been approved by DEP. The OEG was awarded a cleanup grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency to fund the cleanup activities needed on the site.

This community center now houses the Boys and Girls Club of Lachoochee.  The mission for the Boys and Girls Club is to enable all young people, especially those who need us the most, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible, caring citizens.
